EDLD 5399 Capstone
Superintendent Internship
Week Five
Assignment, Part 1 and Part E of the Three Year Professional Development Plan
Reflection on Activity
In reviewing my Post SBEC Assessment, discussions with my Field Supervisor, Dr. Creel, and intern plan
progress, I saw several areas I wished to improve upon. First, I would like to enhance my knowledge of technology issues. Although I have always been interested in these, I believe it is essential in 21st Centruy leadership to keep current with new developments. Therefore, attending the TCEA Conference would be helpful.
I saw a need to strengthen data interpretation and awareness of effect instructional programs in regard to student assessments. By making use of programs offered through Herff-Jone/Nystrom webinars, I can get current information and make better use of my time.
Acquiring and managing resources is an ongoing challenge. To address this, I would like to attend SUPES Academy, a national leadership institute. I have been invited to join for the past two years, but did not feel ready to emback on this kind of program before finishing my superintendent program. This would give me a national perspective, as well as expand my professional networking opportunities.
I need more experience understanding and working with board of trustee members and attending a TASB Mid-Winter Conference would be theperfect opportunity to not only add to my professional toolbox, but meet superintendents, district personnel and board members across the state.
By my third year out, I would like to attend the Lamar University Superintendents' Academy. I hope by this time I will have a superintendency, so this will be a good opportunity to hone my skills in budgeting and financial matters. I will also be able to gain insight from colleagues in my cohort.
Webinars offered by Marzano Research Laboratory have always been a way to stay up-to-date with the latest instructional research regarding best practices. I see this as an effective way to improve my skills with minimum cost and maximum flexibility in my schedule.
These activities are just a start in what I see as an essential part of my life-long learning and constant improvement of skills. This activity has clarified so many of the lessons I have learned. I have come a long way in understanding the superintendent's role and that I can do this and make a difference to improve students' lives. I appreciate the structure of the program and feel it has been worthwhile in many ways. Thanks to Lamar University and all the professors that lead the courses and I came in contact with. I learned particularly this week, I can depend on the professionals I have met in this program as mentors and colleagues to assist me in all of my professional goals.
